Trucks

October 22nd, 2008 · No Comments · Bermuda Politics, Transport

Well, that was interesting.  Anyone coming into town this morning is probably a little frazzled by the massive traffic backlogs, exacerbated by large numbers of trucks moving in convoy.

Apparently they are staging a protest over Government’s allowing several construction firms to use large quarry dumpster trailers.  You see the law states that these huge trailers should only be used for demolition projects, but the truckers allege that they are improperly being used for general trucking thus cutting into the business of the many small independent truckers.

The truckers feel that their complaints are not being acknowledged by Government.  In fact, a poster on a local web forum alleges that, when the truckers met the Premier (who also serves as Minister of Transport, Tourism, and General Grandeur), he was accompanied by one of the construction firm owners that the truckers were there to complain about!

If true, that’s sure to have overheated the situation.

Update:  News reports this morning say that TCD is undertaking an investigation to enforce the law on this issue.
