The Platinum Period of Bermuda tourism lost its lustre before it even arrived.
These days the Premier seems to be jumping the gun in announcing good news – trying to stay ahead of the bad economic reports we all know are coming.
- He hypes up the 2008 tourism numbers, only later to restate them dramatically downwards due to a computer glitch.
- He predicts great things from a rushed and controversial sales outsourcing, only to admit months later that it wasn’t such a great idea.
- He announces the Grand Atlantic deal when it’s still just a preliminary discussion.
- He reveals that a major hotel chain has scouts in Bermuda, to the obvious discomfort of all concerned.
- He commits to an autumn 2009 ground breaking at the Club Med site, leaving the developer to reset expectations.
These claims and reversals erode the Premier’s credibility as a competent leader in Bermuda’s tourism industry.
