Local media is reporting that the Premier has decided to set aside an effort in Parliament to give MPs a 30% pay increase. This comes just a few years after MPs were given another sizeable pay increase.
Given the tightening economic straits facing Bermuda, this is advisable (cough, mutter, curse).
In fact, I find it remarkable that they were even considering such an increase at this time when most Bermudians are accepting flat or decreasing pay levels. Many argue that Bermuda’s finances have been woefully managed. And this falls in the laps of our MPs.
There’s been a lot of bad financial news in the past weeks for Bermuda and I fear that the knot is only starting to tighten. 2010 will be difficult.
The Premier will however propose a sizeable pay increase for the Minister of Finance, who is apparently a “part time Minister”, making her pay equivalent to her full time counterparts.
I think this is called a “poisoned chalice”.
